The Lutheran Church has been denying for years that it planned to sell the station (one of the last classical music stations in the US, and a 100 KW Class C to boot). People donated money for years, even as the Church planned to sell them out. Anyone who said this might happen up to now was was ruthlessly flamed.

The station at 99.1 was one of the last refuges of sanity for radio listeners. It owns prime FM spectrum, and can be reliably received sixty miles out.
I sense one of the major ownership groups moving one of their weak signals to 99.1. With the current state of the market, they may get a bargain price.

If we have any hope for survival of the music that we all love, compassion must replace name-calling, fairness must replace greed and we need to come together as a musical community and try to understand each other's problems. I once suggested to Don Henley, many years ago after I had left Polygram, that we should form an artist-driven record label, much like Charlie Chaplin did with the movies when he, more than 90 years ago, joined forces with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks to form United Artists. Don's response was correct. He said that trying to get artists and business people together to work for the common good of everyone involved is akin to herding cats. When all is said and done, unfortunately, it's not really about the music or the artist. It's about you and your perception of yourself and how you think things ought to be. And we all know that this very rarely intersects with what actually is. Just because you think this is how it should be only makes it just that: what you think; it doesn't make it true. So let's try to put our best foot forward and remember that anyone can stand in the back of a dark hall and yell obscenities but if you want a better world it starts with you and the things you say and do.

Well, if you're not calling or betting with your own money, what's the risk? Imagine how different the TV shows would be if we were told which players were playing with their own money and which weren't.
Until recently, most tournament players believed that they had an edge over other players and could overcome the vigorish through skillful play. But this was before optimal game strategy became more universally employed. As poker moves from seat-of-the-pants play to easily available complex mathematical strategies, the likelihood of great players emerging from the mass of entrants will dramatically decline. More and more tournaments will be decided by a succession of "coin flips" (competition between two hands of nearly equal value), with results becoming increasingly random. Given that tournament poker is a zero-sum game (all the money comes from the entrants), and the casinos take 6 to 10 percent (or more) for hosting the events, the likelihood of being a long-term consistent winner is quite low. Unlike golf or tennis, where skill is a major factor and the best players inevitably rise to the top, it is now unusual to see a poker player, no matter how skilled, booking repeated wins.
And yet poker is being presented as a potentially life-changing opportunity. A generation of young kids is being seduced into believing in the easy life. Many drop out of school to pursue a misrepresented dream. In the process, they ignore productive careers in order to chase a mirage, an illusion that is in the process of unraveling. Meanwhile, cloistered in their virtual worlds, they are becoming social misfits. Walter Matthau once said that poker combined all the worst aspects of the capitalism that made America great. Perhaps his quip should be amended to say that poker now combines all the worst aspects of virtual existence that threaten American culture. Too bad. For those with a good memory, poker will have been a great pastime. For those who are new to the game, it will be a sorry disappointment.

A browse through the BSG forums brought me a word I had been seeking, and one of M. De Poisson's catchphrases has given me a realization.
As the adult child of an alcoholic, I should have crystallized this earlier. I partially recognized it when I left behind my political forum, and stopped e-mailing my summary of the universe to everybody.
If you have not seen the BSG finale, I won't spoil it. But it did bring me the word I needed.
Alcoholic families pass down behaviors, as much as genes. This is one reason generational theory resonates with me. BSG's "All this has happened before, and will happen again, and again..." recognizes the dysfunctional nature of our culture.
The only way to break the cycle is to blast it down to bedrock (hitting bottom), admitting you have a problem, and starting over, one day at a time.
That covers the "word" part.
One of Monsieur De Poisson's favorite catchphrases, after being told a tale of woe is: "Your point?"
He's nearly gotten fed into an intake for saying it, I should note... :)
But, on a deeper level, he's right. He's echoing the Book Of Ecclesiastes to a T. All this has happened before, many times in human history, and all the bewailing has changed little.
I've been right too many times, and it has not gotten me sex or (much) money. I left the forum because I realized it was the only way to get out of the alcoholic family cycle. Being the sinned against, and being vindicated by the future events I've predicted time and again, has not done me much emotional good. Being right at work, about world events, and the economy has not helped me much, and no one has been particularly grateful when I've pointed out my correct calls.
It just made me co-dependent.
Here's the synergy:
Word: Preachy.
Phrase: Waste of time and energy on unfixable problems.
Gen X has always considered itself the sinned against, by the sinning Boomers. Hence their desire to like DAAAARRRRRK themes (self-pity by X), and their berating Boomers on their many failings (anger, envy on the part of X).
What the Gen X'rs do NOT realize is that the other generations see *their* flaws just as well. Just like an alcoholic family.
Condemning the Boomers (correctly) for their hypocrisy and sanctimoniousness, they have themselves become intolerant, preachy, sociopaths/bastards. Think Cavil. Or, Dr. Gregory House.
They *hate* being called on *their* felgercarb.
So much for the pragmatism and good sense that would rescue us all.
Moore and BSG have been one huge sermon. Woe Unto Thee, Oh Israel!
The preachy bastard hasn't told us anything new ("your point?"). And, he's been a complete bastard about it, jerking us around so long- and reveling in it.
Sounds like my debate opponents back on the forum.
Dad said: "Everybody should believe in something. I believe I'll have another drink!"
I believe I'll take another nap.

I have very vivid dreams.
I'll spare you most of the details. The summary was that it was breaking (literally) from the past. During one part of the dream, one of the Bad Guys was interrogating me (using methods not covered under the Geneva Convention), and was asking me what I wanted to be, for their own nefarious purposes, of course.
"A Writer", was what I was compelled to reply.
Ask anybody, especially me, and they will tell you I'm a hack.
So, I failed all the Evil Genius Tests, and they threw me out onto a street in Florida, with blue jeans, no shirt, and a briefcase.
How I broke their hold on me (and not just killed them, but DESTROYED them, forever), is probably classic Twilight Zone schlock. I was happily arrested by the corrupt Florida cops at the end of the dream. No bystanders or pets were involved in the denouement. Didn't fire a shot, or a nuke. :)
Part of what brought this on, was last night was the series finale for the new Battlestar Galactica. I got to see tons of stuff online that was normally reserved for the DVD.
It re-enforced something what had been a gut feeling of mine all along: Ronald D. Moore is an arrogant asshole.
Great casting, writing, etc. Magnificent cast. But if Moore is this generations' Great TV Writer, I'm damned glad that I suck.
Moore is the living personification of my Gen X debate opponents.
Listen, carefully, to the podcasts in the enhanced episodes, and hear how he treats his wife, for instance. It's all about him. Wonderful descriptions of the creative process. and nothing else matters. Oh, yeah, he's also resentful of when he can't smoke and booze it up for the podcasts.
He's a genius, all right. And a complete sociopath. Smartest Guy In the Room. And, he's even modest about it. :)

Observations 20 MAR 2009
Today was a sad day.
My friend's mom died this week. She had been quite ill for a long time, and was living in a nursing home. Then, her health finally failed, and she was placed in a hospice facility. She had her funeral today, and I attended. Most of our social group appeared for the visitation and funeral.
My friend kept his feelings under control; perhaps too much so. He usually hides his pain.
I felt the sadness of the occasion myself pretty badly. At the luncheon afterwards, I only had a small plate of macaroni and cheese. It was all I could handle.
Deaths are one way of measuring the beginning and ending of things. When my Uncle Bill died, on the very last day of summer 2000, it was a marker that the GI generation was finished. My other GI uncle's deaths were confirmations, but I was the last member of the family to have actually spoken to Uncle Bill, less than an hour before he died. It made it quite personal.
I could not have foreseen what would be happening less than two months from his death (the 2000 election), and about one year from his death (11 SEP 2001). My mom's family has quite a sense of timing. My Aunt Mary died right after the GOP's death warrant had been written in 2006.
By that time, I had discovered generational theory.
My mom, my aunt Mary, and my friends mom are all members of the Silent Generation. Many members of the funeral party were old train enthusiasts, like my friends mom (and late husband). With the loss of the Silents, all the safeties are off. We have a Live Weapon.
The nice thing is that trains might make a comeback, in the next generation. But the last attempt to hold the status quo ante-bellum is finished. By summer or fall this year, the financial system probably will have expired. Verdict: Death By Misadventure/Suicide.

Early Observations 14 MAR 2009
I think that in the next decade or so, one of the reformations will be that of a new, more viable, center-right conservative party. A split from the Democrats of their most socially and fiscally conservative members will merge with disaffected former centrist Republicans. An analogy would be Germany's Christian Democrat Party. This will also push the Democratic Party further left, and as power corrupts the Dems (as it did Bush 2), a more competent conservatism can be a viable alternative. The new Conservative Party would spend more time working, and less time hating. The pragmatism of the coming 1T will shape this (I Like Ike).

It has not been a very good week.
I am still alive, and employed. That would seem to be the good news.
Max's back legs are getting weaker. He's waking up more in the middle of the night. Another visit to the vet may be in order, for more pain meds.
The economy keeps getting worse. The fact that I, and others, predicted this does not give me much satisfaction.
As a conservative, I'm watching my putative party self-destruct. And you were wondering why I posted so many critical pieces? No one listened to me then, either. The GOP refused to learn from it's mistakes, just as the liberals did during the Great Society, then Carter era's. Now, the tables are turned.
My former politics hangout is not dealing well with this. Free Republic looks sane and rational in comparison. One of my adversaries was celebrating my departure, and taunting me as a "coward".
When your beer gets pissed in by a mean drunk, and the bartender won't do anything, you've got two choices:
A) 20-to-life for Murder One (if you survive).
B) Leave the bar. Ignore the jeering. Act like a grown-up.
Even George C. Scott and Pappy Boyington got tired of barfights. Nothing I say or do will change the idiots.
How much of my life do I want to spend on fools? Real Life is bad enough.
Back to the war.

KDNL (ABC 30) Analog Gone Forever
KDNL has shut down it's analog transmitter on RF 30. The digital transmitter is fully operational on the tower at Kenrick.
